Blue Spruce Habitat for Humanity is the foothills
affiliate of Habitat
for Humanity International. We serve the mountain areas of western
Jefferson County, Clear Creek County and parts of Park County near
Bailey. We are a Christian ecumenical housing ministry that assists
low-income families building and buying their own homes. Habitat
welcomes all people, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, or any
other difference, to join us and build homes for people in need of
a decent, affordable place to live.
Today Blue Spruce has hundreds volunteers, who contribute
a total of 4,000 hours per home. We have built 29 homes locally, and
built homes for an additional 47 families through our annual tithe
to Habitat’s
international work. We will build another duplex this year (2012) in
Kittredge for two hardworking families who need a decent home in which
to raise their children.
All
Habitat homeowners are local residents, living, working, attending
church and having children in school here in our mountain community.
They include day care providers, school bus drivers, wait persons,
web site designers, housekeepers, carpenters, preschool teachers and
others. It is the mission of Blue Spruce Habitat for Humanity to live
out our principles of faith and compassion by building simple decent
affordable homes and providing education and resources through community
partnerships offering families an opportunity to realize their full
potential.
How the Program Works:
Habitat for Humanity is a homeownership program. Homes are not given
away. Hardworking families go through a rigorous selection process
and purchase their home with an affordable mortgage and at no
profit to Habitat. Their monthly mortgage payment is set at
25% of their gross monthly income, allowing families to spend more
of their income toward other necessities like reliable transportation
or health care. Each adult in a Habitat homeowner family puts
in 250 hours of sweat equity labor into building their home, and
the homes of others.
Sweat equity
builds pride, dignity and a strong sense of ownership. Families
also take workshops to prepare them to be successful homeowners. It’s
a program that works! Habitat homes provide a lasting solution
to a families housing crisis, and enables them to break the cycle of
poverty and grow into their God-given potential. Habitat’s
impact is felt for generations to come.
Blue Spruce Habitat for Humanity depends entirely
on local support. Volunteer or donate and
be a part of changing our community, one home and one family at a time.
